World Dance Group to Share the Joy of African Music and Dance

November 15, 2016

Friends of Woni is pleased to welcome World Dance for Humanity as our opening act at the Friends Impact Concert on November 19th. The Santa Barbra-based group will be dancing to songs from Ethiopia, South Africa, Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, and Rwanda. They will also share a beautiful video from their recent trip to Rwanda.

World Dance was founded in 2010 by dancer, anthropologist and aid worker Janet Reineck. Her five weekly dance classes offer women of all ages and skill levels a chance to get in shape and inspired, while helping people in need. All donations and class fees go to Rwanda, where World Dance is helping 7,705 people in 20 communities lift themselves out of poverty through donations of goats and cows, school stipends, training, and small business development.

Each October, World Dance organizes Santa Barbara’s Thriller event to raise funds so 100 Rwanda students can attend school. Year-round, World Dancers volunteer at the Westside Boys and Girls Club and reach out to wheelchair-bound folks in our community through dance and music.

Last summer, eleven World Dancers visited Rwanda, and returned more passionate than ever about the communities they are serving there. The video they’ll be showing on the 19th gives us an intimate glimpse into the connection between the World Dancers and their sisters in Rwanda.

“Last summer’s journey was completely amazing. We spent almost all our time in the villages…hugging, dancing wildly, and talking with the people about their lives. The changes we are seeing in the communities are truly remarkable. Our donations have given them the means to create a sustainable income, and the confidence they need to envision and plan for the future. We are on this journey together – helping people survive and succeed… one step at a time.”

– Janet Reineck
