Amboseli Maasai School PDF Print Email

There is a need to complete the second room of the Amboseli Maasai School, due to over crowding. What is needed is desks, blackboard, and some type of flooring, and a door.

This village in Amboseli at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro is in very harsh land, volcanic rocks are all over , one can hardly walk without stepping on the many rocks. It is not a farm land, and grass is sparse. The government has restricted the Maasai from their former ways of nomadic living, to having to stay in one place. They do not now grow crops, they raise cattle and sheep. These they use to barter for foods they eat.

The main source of income to them is to invite tourists to their village for tours. From the tour operators they receive a small amount of monies for each tourist they entertain. The women of the village also make beautiful beaded jewelry, bracelets, necklaces, belts, and other items for tourist trade. It takes one woman a week to make a beaded bracelet that sells for $20.00 US dollars, so not much is left over, for so much time spent on such items.

The estimated cost of finishing this school room is approximately $1000.00 US.
